The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Governor Aminu Tambuwal of the Peoples Democratic Party as Sokoto state governor-elect.

Announcing the final results of the election, the state Returning Officer, Prof. Fatimah Mukhtar, said Tambuwal polled a total score of 512,002 votes to beat Ahmad Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress who garnered 511,660
Tambuwal won with a slim margin of 342 votes.

The Resident Electoral Officer, Prof. Sadiq Musa, had said the declaration of the winner was be based on simple majority.
Mukhtar said the number of registered voters was 1,887,767, while accredited voters were 1,083,413.
Total votes cast were 1,067,994 while the number of rejected votes was 31,662.
